Writing thoughtful end of year evaluations is important. As a team manager, I had the opportunity to write many reviews and dedicated accouple hours to each one. Why? It is an important way to memorialize the year, recognizing the accomplishments of each team member. It’s how I ensured they knew I knew what they accomplished and how they had impact on our team and the company more broadly.
Reminiscing about the year, the FULL year, provides an opportunity to reflect on how the individual’s work impacted patients, how they grew as a member of the team, and how they evolved in the areas identified for development. To ensure the review was comprehensive, I looked through my notes, emails, field visit reports, etc. from the year. There should be no surprises during the end of year evaluation as anything important enough to but put in a year-end review would have been discussed during continual coaching and feedback discussions.
I enjoyed this process as highlighting an individual’s accomplishments and impact as well as the growth in their work was rewarding.
As a manager, how do you approach end of year evaluations to ensure your team feels seen and appreciated? In not through end of year evaluations, what is your process?
