Demystifying the Pharmaceutical Industry

I had the opportunity to participate in an IPhO networking panel at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy with other pharmacists working in the pharmaceutical industry. The panel consisted of OSU alumni from all aspects of the industry equally enthusiastic about sharing their expertise with the IPhO students eager to learn about more non-traditional career opportunities.

What made this event so great?

- Students arrived with questions, ready to learn more.

- Students learned about careers within pharma they didn’t know were options.

- Each panelist had their own breakout room, ensuring plenty of time to address questions from all the students.

- Students were able to navigate in and out breakout rooms, focusing on career areas of choice.

- The panelists were in all stages of their careers and enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge.

Demystifying the pharmaceutical industry and educating students about available career options is so rewarding, especially when they have little exposure to this nontraditional career option. I’ve enjoyed formally teaching an elective on the industry at two universities and am satisfied when former students who pursue careers in the industry circle back to tell me how much they enjoy their work.

How have you shared your experiences with students?

Share a story about how you demystified the pharmaceutical industry.
