Let’s take this day to recognize the hard work and dedication of these distinctive and important people on the medical team. What makes this role so unique? Well, it requires a combination of strong relationship skills, solid technical competency, as well as leadership, autonomy with a dash of entrepreneurship. Being present during each interaction with a KOL/HCP will result in a valuable exchange, whether it’s your first or 50th scientific engagement with that KOL you never know what direction the meeting will go. This job is a true art. Join in the celebration of YOU today!

One of my favorite memories from when I was an MSL involved a KOL who didn’t want to meet me as he stated he would never use the product. I knew he was an active speaker for a competing product and therefore he could be asked questions about other products in the space, including mine. I reminded him that as a KOL and prolific speaker, he may want to gain an understanding of our data so he could provide accurate answers with the correct information. He agreed. After months of reviewing the complete data package, he called me emphatically outlining the unique value of my product and that he needed to meet ASAP to discuss his insights. Understanding his motivations and persistence opened the door to meaningful scientific exchange. It truly felt that I practiced the art of being an MSL, that the KOL found value in our scientific exchange, and that meant patients would be impacted.

How do you implement the art of being an MSL? What accomplishments are you proud of while practicing the art of the impactful MSL?
